How did you and Cathy meet?
It
all happened on a spring evening in 1973, at the King's House, a beautiful
retreat center located in Belleville, Illinois. I happen to
know that it was a Thursday evening, because that is the day of the
week when prayer meetings were held in a spacious, comfortable
meeting room located on the grounds of the retreat center. Cathy
was one of the few young people who attended the meetings, and I was
immediately struck by the cheerfulness and joy that she exuded.
Despite the fact that we had each been raised to believe in Jesus,
read the Bible, and attend church, the spring of 1973 marked a
key moment in our lives, as we each opened our hearts to Jesus in a
new and deep way, and received a fresh infilling of the Holy
Spirit. Six springs later, in 1979, we were married.
Could
you share an anecdote from your childhood?
When I was five years old, and visiting Miami Beach with my parents and brother, Dave (I suppose the year would have been 1961), my dad was holding a camera up, attempting to snap a picture of me running along the beach, clad in bright red trunks. I told my dad that I wanted him to take a movie of me, not merely a still picture. He tried to explain to me that he did not have a movie camera, and that it would be impossible to fulfill my request. Doggedly determined, I told him that I would run fast, and make a motion picture happen! To this day, my dad's collection of color slides includes a vivid -- and very blurred -- image of me dashing along the beach! (I don't remember how old I was when it dawned on me that my dad could not have produced a movie with a still camera!)
